It was a cold, clear night.
Twinkling stars above, bright city lights below.
Waiting at one of the city’s most picturesque spots, I bounced up & down in my running shoes a few times.
“What time are we meeting your sister again?” I asked my friend Bridgid, my breath coming out in little fog puffs.
“Umm…soon!” she replied quickly, glancing around the completely deserted area. “She should be here any minute.”
I shoved my hands deeper into my winter parka & looked out at the gorgeous view.
“Don’t you just love it here?” I sighed happily, my eyes drinking in the softly lit buildings, the quiet river, the cars that looked like little toys on a child’s race track. “This is one of my favorite spots.”
“I do!” Bridgid replied. “Actually, I have my camera in the car. Let me run back and get it…”
She turned on her heel & absolutely hightailed it out of sight. I stared at her, shrugged and turned back around.
And then…my heart stopped.
The Hubs was coming up the stone steps, the city aglow behind him. An extremely dressed up & handsome Hubs, carrying a dozen absolutely perfect long-stem red roses.
I screamed.
And started hopping up and down.
“Hi Ams,” he said, arriving in front of me and giving my cheek a kiss.
“What..? How…? I thought you were in class…?” I stammered.
“I was. And now I’m here.” he said with a smile.
I nodded, too stunned to speak. What was happening…?
Wait~ really. WHAT WAS HAPPENING?!
“Do you remember that walk we took on our first date in college?” he Hubs asked softly, taking my hand & lacing our fingers together.
I nodded again, still at a loss for words.
“Remember how we walked all the way to the top of the hill and looked out at the city?” he continued, slow & steady. I was mesmerized.
“I remember,” I said softly.
“We started our relationship, our journey together, on that hill overlooking the city. A new adventure, just the two of us. So I thought it was only fitting that we started the next chapter in our adventure overlooking a city again. Looking out over the city that means so much to us, the city where we’ve built our life together.”
He got down on one knee.
I stopped breathing.
Then, the words that changed everything:
Amy, will you marry me?
And then: me shouting, “YES! Yes yes YES!! Of course!!!”
Also: me throwing myself into his arms.
The ring going on my finger.
Him smiling down at me, me beaming back up at him.
Laughing and crying and kissing.
And more laughing and crying and kissing.
“We’re going to be a family!” I said softly into his chest, on minute 24 of our endless hug/kiss/tears/laughter cycle.
He pulled me even closer and kissed the top of my head.
“A family,” he agreed. I could hear the smile in his voice.
We stayed frozen in that spot~ in our spot~ for a long, long time.
Long enough to savor the life-changing moment and commit it to memory. Tuck in into our hearts for forever safekeeping.
Long enough for Bridgid to snap a shot {from three streets below} of us hugging, blissfully oblivious to the entire world {The Hubs later asked if I had any idea the proposal was coming that night. My response? If I had, I wouldn’t have gone to the gym after work that day and I certainly wouldn’t have shown up in a sweaty t-shirt, yoga pants, tennis shoes & a ponytail. Lol}.

And we stayed in our spot long enough to realize that in that instant, on the hilltop overlooking our beloved city, our lives had changed for the better.
We had promised each other a new level of love. Of faith and commitment. Of strength and understanding and partnership and working through it no matter what.
Happy 6th Anniversary to my guy~ the best friend & husband I could ask for. My partner in crime, my voice of reason, my support and strength. And my love.

My heart is yours.
Always & forever.

And I love our beautiful, chaotic, wonderful, loud, busy, happy, not always perfect but perfect together life.
Counting My Kisses: Throughout our six years of married life, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said: Thanks for asking me to be your wife. His response every.single.time? Thanks for saying yes. It has been said in big moments like the births of our daughters, and in small moments when we’re half asleep on the couch~ but we both mean it, each & every time. Thanks for building this amazingly great life with me, Hubs. There’s no one I’d rather be on this adventure with. Here’s to many, many more happy years ahead! xoxoxo
