Beautiful

Happy Thursday, friends!

Last week, my friend Michelle sent me a great article to read, and it has been on my mind & heart since I read it.

The topic?

Mommas need to be in pictures, too {here’s the Huffington Post article by Allison Tate}.

I so connected with the article.

I’d rather be behind the camera than in front of it. So many days, I’m wearing yoga pants and a comfy shirt. My hair isn’t straightened. Minimum makeup.

And let’s face it: the kiddos are so.much.cuter.

But…as Allison Tate points out:

Our sons need to see how young and beautiful and human their mamas were. Our daughters need to see us vulnerable and open and just being ourselves~ women, mamas, people living lives. Avoiding the camera because we don’t like to see our own pictures? How can that be okay?

Since reading this article, I’m working on letting go of the not-so-perfectly-photoworthy moments & embracing the everyday moments. The real moments. Because I want my girls to know that their momma is proud of herself, and that even though this is the most all-consuming {and sometimes frustrating!} job I’ve ever had, it is also the very best job. The most rewarding. The most fun.

And I want to make sure I’m a part of the picture, too.

This photo from last summer used to make me cringe a bit, since I have zero makeup  on & I’m sporting a ponytail.

But today I’m looking through it with different eyes. My girls think it’s beautiful and you know what?

So do I.

Counting My Kisses: This photo~ while not my first choice as a framer~ is a keepsake. It captures our everyday life~ and our everyday love. It captures the pride & love I feel for our daughters each & every day. I want our children to know that it’s good to be comfortable in your own skin, and that beautiful doesn’t always equal perfectly dressed & made up. In our house, beautiful equal real. Beautiful equals endless hugs and kisses and giggles. Beautiful equals happiness, both inside and out.

What does beautiful mean in your house?

Great post! I tend to shy away from being in front of the camera too. When I am in front of the camera, I want to make sure that I look just right…makeup, hair, standing so I look the most slim ;) I’m really missing out on some great moments with my son because of my perfectionist attitude. He’s 12 and if these upcoming years fly by like the last 12 years have, I don’t have much time!

{Melinda} I love this. So true. Just yesterday I was looking for a picture of me with the kids doing an activity together from our vacation. I wanted to use one of us all together for a blog post. And I couldn’t find a single one of me with them. Not one. For all the reasons you describe.

You’ve inspired me to be more deliberate about being a part of the photo action instead of always hiding behind the camera. I need to just take more photos in general. The kids are older and I don’t think about it as much!

I loved that article too! I’m even more grateful that I paid a photographer to do pictures with me and the kids after reading it.
