The donut date

Dear H-Berry,

I’m writing this from a special place in my heart~ the spot that you & I share as second-born daughters.

We’ve started a sweet little tradition, you & I. Truth be told, I didn’t mean for it to become a thing…but somehow it has.

And I’m glad.

That first day Little O was at preschool, you seemed a little lost.

“O? O?” you kept asking me, pointing to her carseat, her spot on the bench at the kitchen table, her co-driver seat in the grocery store cart.

“She’s at school, sweetheart,” I gently reminded you. “We’ll go pick her up in a little bit, okay?”

You nodded and smiled and we carried on with whatever we were doing.

The second day, I decided to start our solo time off with something different. Something fun and unexpected~ and something I’ve never done with Little O.

A donut date.

With my favorite little 20-month-old companion~ you.

The following Thursday, I asked if you wanted to go get a donut together.

You gave me a huge grin, a big nod & opened your mouth as wide as you could.

“Ahhh” you called out, pointing at your teeth.

Message clear: you wanted to eat a donut.

And so, my sweet little friend, donut dates have become our Thursday thing.

It makes my heart soar to see your happy, frosting-and-sprinkle-covered face.

And when you reach out with those sweet, sticky fingers to give me a bite of your most prized possession?

I can’t help but swoop down and give those adorable cheeks a few more kisses. And say a quick silent prayer of thanks that I’m having the chance to build solo memories with you, just like I had the chance to with your sister.

It must be said: you do have the occasional post-donut date sugar crash…

but you rock right through it, just like you do with everything else, sweet girl. {Also? I’d like to nap after grocery shopping too!}.

I want you to know that I cherish this alone time with you, H-Berry. I cherish you and all of your squealy giggles, your fun, easygoing personality and your fabulously contagious smiles.

And I’m loving our little donut dates. I couldn’t be happier that it has become our thing.

It’s hard to tell what’s sweeter~ the donuts or you.

Love, Mommy

Counting My Kisses: When I was little, my mom took me on special lunch dates while my older sis was at school. I adored every minute of being alone with her~ it was such a treat! I’m so thankful that I can have this wonderful one-on-one time with H-Berry~ and the added bonus is that Little O loves preschool {more on that next week!}. It’s a win-win for everyone…love!

What are you up to this weekend? Have a great one!

Its so funny…I still remember going to see “The Land Before Time” with my mom when Elizabeth was at school one day! H will remember her time with you better than O will. And, that’s the joy of being #2!!!!

Your pictures are as sweet as those donuts. Makes me miss my mom.

How sweet! (no pun intended!) I will have to remember that when my oldest starts school b/c she and little brother are stuck like glue to each other, and I know he will feel lost.

Thanks OneMommy! Yes it’s definitely strange for our youngest, she seems a bit off without her older sis around. She seems to like being Mommy’s helper though…and I’m loving the chance to have one-on-one time with her! :)
